Do you have any idea how long it takes to get a blow torch operating????
At least 2 minutes to get the pressure tube heated up and vaporizing the
gasoline or coleman fuel. Are you sure the perp used a blow torch???/

Now you've done it!
The local paper had a picture and story last year of an accident during
a sewer construction project. The picture showed a front end loader with
a load of crushed rock had gotten too close to the edge of the hole and
the sandy ground had given away and most of the loader had gone into the
hole. The story was covered for several days and always told of the dump
truck that backed into the hole!

And more important, since the clueless guy seemed to think
alt.home.repair was relevant (why do we see so many rants between there
and misc.consumers?), it was likely one of those pocket torches, which is
butane. Really kind of useful, if safety considerations make it hard to
start up, the small size is likely what the guy in the story wanted. A
propane torch is hardly that portable, and unless you splurge on the more
expensive model with the self starter, you have to turn the knob, hold the
torch, and use an igniter, kind of hard to hold the victim while doing
that, so they could have run away while you arm your threatening device.

I really should get a new tank of propane for my torch, there are times
when it can be useful. Though that pocket butane torch has been handy for
soldering things that were too much for my soldering gun.

defensive weapon too. Nice flame thrower if you have a cigarette
lighter, unless that's just a movie thing.

I once accidentally sprayed my eye with dryer fabric-softener spray and
had blurry vision for several days. The effects of hair spray probably
last longer.

I like *something*. I can't carry my .357 in my pocket and the .380
is pretty much the same as a 9mm (it is 9mm), which doesn't fit in my
pocket, either. (I don't own a .45 yet, but soon - gotta find the

I've never gone out of the house without some sort of knife, since I was
at least 15. But it would never occur to me to use it as a weapon. Even
if it did, I don't think I could follow through. We do get squeamish.

So things like a rolled up newspaper is more in the realm of what some can
use, and then run.

I think I got it from reading about those self-defense courses, but one
time when a bicyclist went through a red light when I was crossing, and
worse, a bus was stopped at that corner so the cyclist didn't know if any
pedestrians were crossing, he ran into my arm, which caused him to attack
me like I was the problem. I remember seeing sunglasses in his pocket,
and taking them and throwing them. I seem to recall he want after the
sunglasses. Wouldn't work when someone was planning to do you damage, but
it has potential for distracting some random attack.

If attacked by a thug, I suspect it's way too time-consuming to find
exactly the right blade in your Leatherman to use for self-defense.

Someone in a bicycle newsgroup suggested that if you are chased by a
dog, turn and yell GET OFF THE COUCH! which will confuse him long enough
for you to escape. Might not be a bad idea to carry a few spare tennis
balls along when you ride too...

I remember seeing sunglasses in his pocket, and taking them and throwing them.
I seem to recall he want after the
sunglasses. Wouldn't work when someone was planning to do you damage, but
it has potential for distracting some random attack.

Someone in a bicycle newsgroup suggested that if you are chased by a
dog, turn and yell GET OFF THE COUCH! which will confuse him long enough
for you to escape. Might not be a bad idea to carry a few spare tennis
balls along when you ride too...

When I was a kid, I always got off my bike and faced the dog and then
backed off his territory. Dogs will usually attack something fleeing
but will rarely attack you head-on, as long as you're non-threatening.
Of course attack dogs are trained differently so there is no escape. A
gun works here, too. The second half of the magazine belongs to the
owner.

You should check Snopes, and a couple other web sites. Wasp spray isn't
suited for self defense.

and find them selves under protected. I'd hate to
speak at the funeral of someone who could have had
effective defense, but chose to rely on wasp spray.

Carb cleaner works best on wasps. Has no effect on bumble bees because
of their furry coats. Bet it would work for self defense, also.

Cheap hairspray works very well. It sticks their wings together (they
touch on the backstroke) and they drop like a rock.

A lot of people smarter than the average reporter will refer to a
propane torch or a butane torch as a "blow torch" - and the flame on
them is virtually instant - and they are a LOT easier to carry around
and conceal.

I'd guess it's a MAPP torch; most have a combo valve and igniter which
is actuated with a trigger pull.
Where there are idiotic laws making self-defense difficult, I recommend
a can of wasp and hornet spray. Reaches 10' or so, unlike mace/pepper
spray, it doesn't wear off, and if the attacker fires a gun, it'll
ignite and become a flame thrower.

I once accidentally sprayed my eye with dryer fabric-softener spray and had
blurry vision for several days. The effects of hair spray probably last
longer.

Especially if it's perfumed, which can make a lot of things "toxic".

* Propane is hot. Mapp is hotter. Acetylene
is hotter, yet. Oxy acetylene is even more
so. I've not used Mapp Pro, but suspect it's
some where between propane and mapp.

* Have a fire extinguisher near by, and be
ready to use it. Garden hose is excellent idea.

* When possible, heat from the back of what you
are doing, so you don't light the rest of the
work on fire.

* Small silver brazing can be done with mapp,
but acetylene is preferred.

Freshmen in college dorms tend to do a lot of stupid stuff to annoy
each other (but generally they avoided anything that had a high
chance of permanent harm). This was particularly true just before
vacations or during vacations among students who didn't leave for
whatever reason, so they didn't have much studying to do. I recall
that in the 1970's I saw demonstrations of things like turning spray
deodorant into a flame thrower. I may have tried a couple of them.
Anyway, it flames, but as a practical attack it may be worthless:
it's too easy to knock a lighter out of position or out of your
hand, and while you're fooling with the lighter and spray can of
something, it's hard to protect your groin from being kicked. It's
not like it can produce flames that can reach across a room.

There was also the (annoying but harmless) attack that sometimes
worked through a locked door: fill an envelope (typically 8" x 11",
open on the short end) full of shaving cream, insert open end under
door of dorm room, get your copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry
and Physics (a very thick, heavy book) and drop it on the envelope.
Often, you'd hit the ceiling of the far side of the room.

Hair spray does ignite with a lighter and shoots a flame.. I've done
it, my brother has done it. It is not a defense weapon, though.

At least 2 minutes to get the pressure tube heated up and vaporizing the
gasoline or coleman fuel. Are you sure the perp used a blow torch???/
