Sofa cushions too firm
(too old to reply)

Okay this is a strange posting, I am sure. We recently bought new
furniture, (like three days ago) after shopping around many many
places. We went to Meier and Frank and found a wonderful set of three
pieces, sofa, loveseat, big chair and ottoman for about 1200.00, a
really great deal. When we had it delivered, we went to sit in it and
the furniture cushions in all three pieces seems MUCH MUCH firmer than
when we sat in it at the store. We bought the furniture because it
was pluffy, not because it was firm. I am taking a cushion with me
tomorrow back to the store to make sure it's not my imagination, but
has anyone run across this before? And do you think it's just because
the cushion is new and hasn't been sat in very much? I mean, common
sense tells me it will soften perhaps a bit, but this is much much
much firmer. Second question, has anyone had their cushions restuffed
to make them softer and if so, what recommendations?

Thanks!

the ones in the store may be a different density foam, or they could have
been sat on by lots of people and smashed down. yours will too over time,
but yes, you can get them restuffed. look up upholsterers in your yellow
pages.

For that price, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't use various
manufacturers and the quality varies from set to set. Not that I'm an
expert about furniture or anything. OTOH, it could be that the floor
model was softer due to use. That would concern me personally (that it
could differ so much over time), as I like to invest in stuff that's
not going to wear out all that fast.

But then again...

I bought an Ethan Allen sofa over 12 years ago, and the dang thing is
as good as it was when I bought it, despite constant use and repeated
jumping on the cushions by two young kids. Great, except that I am
terribly bored with this sofa by now. Can't justify throwing it out
since it's in such good condition still!

We recently had to exchange a mattress. There was only two other
choices in our price range. One was close to what we wanted, but
seemed as if the springs were real shaky -- you could feel them
wiggle. We went with that mattress since it was for us the lesser of
two evils. Luckily, when our new mattress arrived, it didn't have this
problem. So I can only guess that the floor model was wiggly due to
use in the store. Our new mattress will probably wear out the same way
too.

I bought a bed at another store. The pillows on the display bed were nice
and soft. But the pillows on the bed that was delivered are too firm.
I never thought to ask if the pillows went with the bed. Duh.
