Discussion:
Air Conditioner and Ceiling Fan?

A friend of mine tells me that I should not be running my ceiling fan
and my 8,000 BTU window air conditioner at the same time. Can anyone
tell me if this is true? Is this due to the cost of running both the
fan and A/C, or does running the ceiling fan make it more difficult for
the AC to cool the room?
Well, why don't you ask your friend why he thinks you should operate this
way?

We have ceiling fans in the bedrooms, kitchen and den, and use them year
round, with the AC and heat.

A ceiling fan (running on a slow speed) evens out the temperature
differences in the rooms that would otherwise occur.

I've never heard this. Ask your friend, rather than us, why he thinks
it's a problem.
Is this due to the cost of running both the fan and A/C,
Obviously, running the ceiling fan and A/C together is more expensive
than running just the A/C. However, if you find that the room is more
comfortable when the fan is running, it's probably worth it, because
it really isn't that expensive to run a ceiling fan.
or
does running the ceiling fan make it more difficult for the AC to cool the
room?
That seems unlikely to me.
I always figured the ceiling fan
would help facilitate the distribution of the cool air throughout the room.
Yes, it probably does, but again, the best metric is whether you can
actually tell the difference when the fan is running. If not, there's
probably no point in running it.
Also, is it okay to stick an oscillating fan in front of the AC?
I don't see anyproblem with this, but if it's really necessary, you
might want to consider getting a better A/C :-).

Thanks for the info.

Incidentally, the A/C has a digital thermometer display. It's 90 degrees
outside right now (101 w/heat index). With the ceiling fan on, the
temperature on the digital display only gets down to 78 degrees. With the
ceiling fan off, it gets down to 74.

I have the A/C set as low as it will go --- 61 degrees. It's an 8,000 BTU
air conditioner. The room is 225 sq. feet with 9 foot ceilings. It's brand
new.

Does it strike anyone as odd that it won't go lower than 78 (74) degrees, or
is this fairly normal?

No it is not odd, you realize that the ceiling fan is directing the
warmer air from the upper part of the room down to where it lowers the
temperature at the A/C...........

Wouldn't the direction of the blades make a difference?
I find that in our situation, it doesn't make any noticeable difference.
However, you might find your own rooms and heat/AC arrangement works
otherwise. Since every ceiling fan I've seen for sale recently is
reversible, it's not a big problem.

Idjit! We can pick out spam without your help.

And in fact decent news providers have already filtered them out, so

It wasn't for your benefit, it was for theirs.

Do tell, who is your server? Maybe I should change.
